Hygiene, body care and wellness

Every day people come into contact with millions of germs and viruses which could grow and multiply and lead to complications if people do not take appropriate precautions. Hygiene and personal care are more than just cleanliness. Practicing good body hygiene does not only positively influence physical health and keep bacteria, viruses, and illnesses away, but is also important for people’s mental wellness and positive self-esteem. In short, health, hygiene, and attractive appearance are all connected. Some of the most basic habits that good hygiene includes are regularly having a bath or a shower, washing hands, and brushing and flossing teeth. In order to be able to maintain cleanliness and take care of one’s appearance, it is of great significance for them to choose the best products. Pharmahouses offer a very wide selection of products intended to cleanse, soothe, heal, protect, and beautify the body. Some of these personal care products are designed to be used under specific circumstances, including antifungal shampoos and creams, head lice and nits lotions, and face masks.

Antifungal shampoos and creams

Antifungal shampoos and creams are used in the case of scalp ringworm and other fungal infections. Fungal infections can be highly contagious and affect the scalp and hair shafts. They might cause itching and burning on the top of the head. They should be treated immediately with medicated shampoos or creams which can be found at pharmahouses. These products are not always enough to completely deal with the infection, as they could not reach hair shafts, but they help by clearing fungi and fungal spores from the surface of the scalps and the hair. For best results it is recommended to use an antifungal shampoo or cream twice a week for a few weeks as an addition to antifungal medicine. The most common types of hair antifungal products are ketoconazole shampoos, selenium sulfide shampoos, and terbinafine creams.

Ketconazole shampoos

Ketoconazole has been used by many brands as a main active ingredient to treat from mild to severe fungal infections. It is very effective for several types of infections. For example, some products containing 2% ketoconazole are used by people with the condition pityriasis, also called tinea versicolor (a fungal infection that causes lightening or darkening of the skin). Moreover, this ingredient can help relieve the typical dandruff flaking, scaling, and itching. The right dosage depends on the specific problem. For fungal infections ketoconazole works by slowing the growth of fungi. When having a shower, people should apply enough shampoo to their hair and gently massage and disperse it around the entire scalp and then wash it out of their hair with warm water. The use of this kind of antifungal products might lead to side effects such as hair loss, bald patches, oily or dry hair, change of hair texture, or intolerance to the chemicals that they contain.

Selenium sulfide shampoos

Selenium sulfide shampoos are widely used to treat certain types of fungi or yeasts, known as dermatophytes. It is not clear how selenium sulfide treats scalp conditions, but it is considered to be the most effective and powerful ingredient. Selenium sulfide has been proven to help by reducing the number of fungi on the skin and preventing the severe dandruff that causes fungus Malassezia from irritating the scalp. The shampoo is in most cases massaged to the scalp firstly twice a week for two weeks and then once a week for two more weeks. It is available over the counter, but when prescribed by a doctor, the patient might be instructed to use it more often for conditions such as pityriasis versicolor. Once it is applied to wet hair it should be left for ten minutes before rinsing. Selenium sulfide products discolour dyed hair and can also discolour metallic jewellery, so it is advisable to remove it before use. The side effects associated with these shampoos include irritation, itching, redness, dry hair, and blistering. It is not the best choice for people with inflamed skin or children under five years.

Terbinafine creams

Terbinafine creams are another treatment approach to a number of fungal infections such as ringworm, pityriasis, candidiasis, athlete’s foot, and jock itch. Terbinafine is an active ingredient that acts by stopping the growth of fungus. A thin layer of the cream should only be applied to the infected area once or twice a day. There is no need to wrap or cover it unless instructed otherwise by a healthcare provider. The dosage and the length depend on the condition that is being treated. The product is only licensed for adults, but can also be used by children if necessary. Improvement of the infection can be noticed in a few weeks, even after the cream is no longer used. Serious side effects are not common, but when left longer than directed, terbinafine cream can cause itchiness, irritation, and burning.

Head lice and nits lotions

Head lice lotions contain ingredients (such as dimethicone and pyrethrins) that kill head lice and their eggs, also called nits. Lice are small insects, up to three mm long, that can be difficult to spot. They are transmitted from head to head and are very common in young children. All family members who have been found head lice should be treated straight away. Lotions should be gently rubbed into the scalp and then spread from roots to tips of the hairs. It should be left for 15 minutes and then after applying a normal shampoo to the hair, it can be washed thoroughly. It is also important to use a nit comb to check the hair for lice. The dosage of the lotion depends on the thickness and the length of the hair. If there are nits that survived the first treatment, it must be repeated once again. Most of the lotions can be purchased without a prescription, but it is advisable to seek advice from GP. This kind of treatment lotions should not be used on babies under six months.

Face masks

Face masks have turned into one of the most popular care and beauty products for both women and men. A large number of masks with different properties is offered at pharmahouses. These home beauty remedies are mostly used to clean or smooth the face skin. The different kinds of face masks are designed for different skin types or conditions, but their common trait is that they are fun to use and very effective. They are very useful in the cases of dehydrated, fatigued, dry or oily skin. There are rehydrating and moisturizing masks, oil-absorbing masks, and pore-perfecting masks. Some of the ingredients face masks contain are clay, black moor mud, aloe vera, algae, massage oils, and minerals and vitamins. The most commonly used masks are cream masks, clay masks, gel masks, sheet masks, and exfoliating masks. Some of them are washed off with water, while others are peeled off by hand. The duration of time which a mask should be left on for depends on its type. It varies from three to 30 minutes, and sometimes all night.
